My dog just had puppies on 9/19 and they already have fleas. Can I give them a bath using baby shampoo ?

The mother is a rat terrier\ chiuahuah. The puppies are very small. I can hold them in the palm of my hand. A friends dog had puppies and they all lived when they were born. But she said that later 2 died because of fleas. I dont want that to happen so any advice that would help I would greatly appreciate. Oh gosh no, sweetheart. You can pick some fleas of each pup by hand. I know that sounds gross but...sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. If you see black stuff in the fur, that's ';flea dirt'; or to be more precise, flea eggs. You'll wanna get those out that way new generations of fleas will be less likely.

you cant gave the puppies a bath the puppies is to small to bath you have to pick him off i have a chihuahua and she going to have puppies but how can i tell if she going to have puppies i have 2 chihuahua a boy and a girl she like to eat human food and dog food to how did the puppies get fleas do the mother have it
NO!!! Check with your vet, but I think you can use both Advantage and Capstar on the mother and that will take care of the puppies. (I am 90% sure both are labelled for lactating b1tches..)





Also, repeatedly change the bedding for the puppies. At least twice a day. The puppies are getting the fleas from their mother, so make sure that the areas she is able to access, inside and outside have also been treated!
Commercial flea products (the kind you buy in stores) are too potent to use on a puppy that young. Call your vet; the have specialized flea sprays that are designed to be used on young puppies. If you can't afford a trip to the vet, just use a flea comb to get rid of the fleas and make sure the puppies bedding is washed in hot water daily to get rid of fleas in their environment.


You can usually use flea shampoo once the puppy is at least 8 weeks old (check the label to be sure).


You'll definitely want to get rid of those fleas! My 5 week old kitten almost died from a flea infestation.
Treating puppies this young could be very dangerous, I would seek the advice of your veterinarian!!


Baby shampoo won't get rid of the fleas either.


Since the puppies have fleas, so does the mother dog. This should have been taken care of prior to her birthing the puppies, as it would have been MUCH safer.


You should have your dog spayed so you dont' contribute to the overpopulation of mutts !!!
Fleas will kill puppies and flea killers will kill puppies. You need to get the mother treated with something from the vet ONLY and then clean bedding and be diligent about combing the pups and picking fleas off of them. Fleas will suck the life out of those pups. Don't be ignorant like your friend and let your pups die. You are going to have to work very hard at ridding them from the pups with out chemicals. Get a flea comb and get started. When you get a flea in the comb, drown it in dish soap, clean the comb and go again. You will have to get that bedding flea free. You can put a handful or 2 of cedar shavings in the pups area to help.. Fleas do not like that. But you can't put a lot of have it where the pups are laying because it is hard on their respiratory system. Just put it under the bedding or around the edges of the box or area you have them.
Take them to the vet! Giving them a bath will probably kill them since they are so young. WHY wasn't the problem taken care of before they were born??


And PLEASE get her spayed. There are too many unwanted dogs in the world, we don't need to bring more in.
Apparently your dogs have not been to see the vet. PLEASE take your dam and her pups to the vet and schedule an appt to have her spayed.





ETA: Awwww, I didn't tell you what you wanted to hear? WELL TOO BAD!!! You need to get your dog and her babies to the vet and stop asking for advice from your friend-who-breeds-dogs-in-her-backyard.
There is good flea stuff out there that is way better.


Shampoo does not get the fleas out of the dogs coat.

You need the advice of a vet on this one. The pups are to small for flea treatments, and can't regulate body temperature yet so baths are risky.

The dogs are too young to bath because they cannot control their body temperatures yet so when they are wet, they will freeze to death. You need to contact your vet tomorrow for advice. The mother dog should have been on a monthly flea treatment already. Also, puppies are supposed to be seen by a vet within a few days of being born. If you can't be a responsible breeder, spay and neuter your dogs.
i no wht u r going through! But u can't give them a bath w/shampoo at all when they r so young. Just put them in warm water and do the best you can.
You need to get a special flea shampoo made especially for puppies. It's not really healthy to wash newborn puppies so I'd check with you vet prior to doing anything.
First....wash the mother in Head %26amp; Shoulders shampoo. This will kill the fleas on her. Secondly, get Adams Flea Powder and sprinkle it on clean bedding. Then let clean momma and babies be on the clean bedding. Change the bedding daily, using a little of the flea powder each time. Wash momma on a weekly basis. This should take care of your problem.
